Frequently Asked Questions

Your questions about the Ledger Live app, answered. Find everything you need to know to get started with secure crypto management.

Getting Started

Ledger Live is the official companion app for Ledger hardware wallets. It's an all-in-one platform available on desktop and mobile that allows you to securely set up your device, manage your crypto assets, check your balance, send/receive funds, and access various crypto services like buying, selling, swapping, and staking.

Yes, the Ledger Live software is completely free to download and use. You will need to purchase a Ledger hardware wallet to secure your crypto, and standard blockchain network fees will apply to transactions.

For maximum security, you should only download Ledger Live from the official Ledger website (ledger.com). Avoid downloading from third-party websites, app stores, or unverified links to protect yourself from phishing and malware.

Ledger Live will notify you within the app when a new update is available. A blue notification bar will appear at the top of the screen. Simply click it and follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the latest version securely.

Security & Ownership

You can download and open Ledger Live without a device to explore the app in 'consultation mode'. However, to manage accounts, send, receive, or perform any transaction, you must connect a Ledger hardware wallet. The hardware wallet is essential for securing your private keys and signing transactions.

Your crypto is safe. Your assets are not stored on the device itself, but on the blockchain. Your device only stores the private keys. As long as you have your 24-word recovery phrase (which you wrote down during setup), you can buy a new Ledger device and restore full access to your accounts.

Yes, it is one of the most secure methods. When you use the 'Buy' feature through Ledger's trusted partners, the crypto you purchase is sent directly to the address secured by your Ledger hardware wallet. This eliminates the risk of leaving funds on an exchange's hot wallet.

Ledger Live is designed with privacy in mind. The app does not have access to your private keys or recovery phrase. Ledger does not store your portfolio information or personal data on its servers. Your accounts are on the blockchain, and the app simply visualizes them.

Features & Usage

Ledger Live supports over 5,500 coins and tokens, including major assets like Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Solana (SOL), and XRP. The list is constantly expanding. You can install different coin applications on your device via the Manager in Ledger Live.

Yes. You can securely manage your Ethereum, Polygon, and Solana-based NFTs through the Ledger Live app. You can view your collection, see its details, and securely send your NFTs to another address, with all transactions validated on your hardware wallet.

The app itself has no fees. However, you will encounter standard blockchain network fees (e.g., gas fees) for any transaction. If you use integrated services like buying, selling, or swapping, Ledger's third-party partners will charge a service fee, which is always displayed for review before you confirm.

MetaMask is a 'hot wallet' where keys are stored online in a browser extension, making them more vulnerable. Ledger Live is an interface for your 'cold' hardware wallet, where keys are always offline. For the best of both worlds, you can connect your Ledger hardware wallet to MetaMask to manage dApps with cold storage security.
